A Secret That Brings Friends Together

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett did not have the big whopper of a secret I was expecting, but I liked that there was friendship in it. I also liked the lesson that being outside in nature makes you a happy person! Out of five stars, I give this book a three star rating.

The main character was a young girl named Mary Lennox. She was ten. She was from India, but she needed to go to England because her mom and dad died from an illness. She had to move with her uncle, Lord Craven, to Misselthwaite Manor. She did not know how to do anything She did not know how to dress herself, or feed herself but she learned. She did not like going outside in India, but she learned to love it at Misselthwaite Manor.

On Mary's first day, she met a nice girl named Martha. Martha told Mary about Dickon, Martha's younger brother, and told her that Mary's uncle had a secret garden. Martha would not tell Mary anything else about it.

Mary also met an old man at Misselthwaite Manor. It looked like he loved gardening, too! His name was Ben Weatherstaff. He was so nice. Mary talked and talked with Ben about gardening. Mary asked him if he knew where the secret  garden was. He told Mary it was Lord Craven's wife's garden, but she had died. and no one had gone in the garden since then.

Soon Mary met Dickon. He loved animals. He had a pony and a rabbit and a lot more animal friends.Mary thought he was funny! Mary and Dickon played outside and explored.

One day while she was looking for the garden, she saw a bird. It looked like a blue breasted bird and Mary said hello to the bird and then the bird flew away. Mary followed the bird and the bird helped her find the secret garden. There was a wall of vines. She ripped the vines down and after she ripped the vies down she saw... a brown door. She had found the secret garden.

She walked inside. All the roses looked dead. Everything looked old and overgrown. She was going to fix it up!

She asked Ben if he knew about roses. He gave Mary some seeds. She didn't tell Ben about the garden though. Every day Mary snuck into the garden and worked. One day she even invited Dickon. It became their secret place. They were friends!

Mary met another boy one strange night. She woke up and heard crying. She followed the sounds down the hallway that led to a room. There she found an ill boy who couldn't walk. His name was Collin. After talking for a bit, they discovered that they were cousins! That was so exciting. She told Collin that she knew where the secret garden was. Mary invited Collin to the secret garden with Dickon and her.

Collin learned how to walk and they all played in the garden every day. They became best friends. I thought it was neat that they could have their own place to have fun outside with nature.
